Rayburn "Ray" Harper , age 80, passed away August 8, 2017 after an eight year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family as they played his favorite Christmas music.
Ray was born on May 17, 1937 in Penrod, Ky., to the late Gladys and Rolf Harper.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 60 years , Aggie; 8 beautiful children, Laurel (Larry) Boender, Raetta (Stephen) Parker, Christine Chavez, George (Sue) Harper, Janie (Mike ) Wallen, John (Chris) Harper, Francine (Mike ) Maseda, Theresa (Carlos) Lugo, and 9th "wild child" Kathie...

Ray was born on May 17, 1937 in Penrod, Ky., to the late Gladys and Rolf Harper.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 60 years , Aggie; 8 beautiful children, Laurel (Larry) Boender, Raetta (Stephen) Parker, Christine Chavez, George (Sue) Harper, Janie (Mike ) Wallen, John (Chris) Harper, Francine (Mike ) Maseda, Theresa (Carlos) Lugo, and 9th "wild child" Kathie (Jeff) Gruber Jones; 24 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; brother, Darrel (Flo) Harper; sisters-in-law, Shirley Orze and Judy Harper; brother-in-law William (Lorraine) McGrail; many cousins; nieces and nephews.
Ray was a 1956 Hammond High School graduate and retired from Inland Steel after 37 years. He extended his love to local community organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, where he served as a Scout leader for many years. Ray also served as President and Coach for the Merrillville Little League and was instrumental in the opening of Merrillville Little League complex in 1976. He was affectionately known as "Poppa" and was the life of the family celebrations.
Visitation will be Friday, August 11, 2017 from 4-8 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 Cline Ave.; Schererville, Indiana 46375). Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Merrillville Little League.
